Reflections from Sept. 23rd Inservice

Reflect on your learning from the September 23rd inservice in terms of:

  1. Implementation: Share ideas you learned from either the Sept. 23 inservice or the Apple Training days that you plan to use. Include how you plan to use them.
  2. Needs: what are your next steps with technology for your current teaching assignment? What do you need to reach those steps? Could be additional planning time, tech assistance, whatever....

  1. Implementation: Today's inservice was very informational. I learned how to work with my email address book and set up a more efficient system for sending emails out to groups. I have already put this to use by creating a contact list for the parents of my students this year. I plan on using this often to send quick updates and reminders to the parents and students.
I also learned an enormous amount of information about the Smart Board, Notebook, DE streaming, Learn 360, blogs, and how to use tools such as iphoto, imovie, and Smilebox to help students create and learn. I plan to use the Smart Board to help kindergarten students practice letter formation using the fun pens and writing tools. I am also going to use the board for morning calendar and interactive activities. I'm also going to use the DE streaming to increase my own knowledge of technology and how to use it in the classroom. I am already using iphoto and imovie, but plan to teach my students how to create a project using these tools.

Needs: I think I have all the tools I need to begin using more technology in the classroom, but I need more time to experiment with it myself first. I need time to learn what I can do with the Smart Board and create lesson plans for my classroom.

  2. I thought the technology inservice was valuable. I learned some new things about address book and e-mail. I think parents appreciate quick e-mails and reminders about things that are happening in the classroom.

I enjoyed the technology sharing session with other staff members. It is always fun to see what others are doing and get new ideas. I want to set up a blog for my students to access from my class web page.

I attended the DE streaming session since it was in my classroom. I really liked the session and I have been using some of the clips with my students since the inservice.

Needs: Having TIME to work with the new technology is the most valuable to me.

  3. I found the afternoon session to be really helpful when staff shared technology ideas with each other. I bookmarked some of the sites that were presented and hope to be able to explore them in future in-service meetings. The morning was nice to be able to adapt things in Address Book and Mail to our preferences.

Needs: I agree with others that we need time to explore these new tools and discuss how we might be able to put these to use in the school and classroom.

  4. The in-service was very helpful in many ways. I was able to learn more about e-mails and the address book. We had time to create our own e-mail groups, elementary, parents, etc. It will be great to have the parents in one group so that I can send out quick messages.
I attended the session on using the Smartboard. I found it to be very valuable. It was a quick overview, but very helpful. We had the opportunity to explore the tools and applications available.
In the afternoon we shared out ideas that we were already implementing into our curriculum. It was interesting to see the variety of things that our staff was putting out. There were a lot of great ideas.
It would be beneficial if we could have more time to implement this technology into the classroom. It takes time to create the lessons for the Smartboard and browse through websites that would work for classroom.

  5. The inservice was very informative and covered many topics, all of which I am trying to practice. We started out the morning with iChat, and how to use iChat for educational purposes, especially the transfer of files and student input. I also learned how to manage my email and student email. Mysteries such as v card and blind carbon copy are not longer a mystery and something I can use with confidence.
I really enjoyed and learned a lot about the SmartBoard. I am looking forward to the Oct 14 SmartBoard inservice so I can use the technology with more confidence and ease.
For my final project I am planning to develop a unit on Ancient Rome using furly.com, iChat, and Keynote.
I did miss the DE streaming presentation and hope to pick up some of that information in the future, it would be a good "hook" for introduction of lessons.
I also agree with the comments of other staff that time and practice are the best way to become better with our new technology.

  6. The in service was an outstanding block of instruction! Information and ideas regarding ical and e-mail, will without a doubt be very useful.

De-streaming has already been implemented into my classroom and will continue to be very useful. Exciting educational videos on demand!

Needs: As always, more time to familiarize and perfect ourselves with ever increasing technology.
    Thanks Deb!

  7. The inservice was very valuable. The email information in the morning gave us some good information, and reviewed some things that we had already learned.

The interactive white board session was very valuable. Becky did a great job taking us through all of the things that we could utilize with the white boards. I can see that it would be very beneficial to have access to an interactive board for the kinds of kids I work with.

It would be great to have an extended amount of time to work on all of the things that we have learned so far. Having time at school with support from our colleges would be very helpful.

  8. I found the discussion and time given to setting up address books to be very beneficial. It is a "little" thing that can pay off in bigger ways later. I plan on sending (and have already done so) student reminder emails about assignments and what is needed for class the next day. I also enjoyed the sharing of ideas with staff and seeing what other teachers are doing in their classrooms. This sparks ideas with me to take the idea a different way in my classroom I also am planning on using DE streaming more often now because it is so much easier than in years past! Little snips of videos are more useful to me than the whole video that takes up the whole class with useless information. Thanks for making it so easy!
I would again like to see work time provided for technology work on my own because it doesn't alway happen at night with busy schedules. There is so much I want to do, but can't find the time to investigate and implement it!!!! The kids are losing out if I don't have the time....

  9. The inservice on the smartboard was very interesting and informative. Because we were 'learning' from a co-worker who used the smartboard in the past, the atmosphere was very comfortable, which allowed for ongoing questions and interactive activities. We learned tools that can be used with or without a smartboard - one which I have already used with my first grade Title students: rolling the consonant/vowel dice to make words and word families!! I would enjoy additional training in this area but I am also anxious for continued training in other areas. A very enjoyable and productive day!!

  10. The inservice was one of the better ones I have been at. The first session gave a lot on emails. I was able to create address books which will really be useful in sending emails to different groups. I also was able to set up several folders to save particular emails. I think that will help when I need to recall what it is I was suppose to do when dealing with the different technology. It sure is easier than going through paper copies of saved emails.
Since I knew next to nothing about a smart board, the next session that Becky presented was great. I feel like I got a good feel about some of the potential for the smart board. Hopefully I will have one hooked up before I forget everything presented. As of yet it is just sitting off to the side of the room. "Do the Math" supposedly has smartboard software with it. I am looking forward to learning about that through the Do the Math training at AEA.

  11. The inservice on the 23rd was one of most valuable, useful inservices I have attended. The sharing of ideas, learning new skills, and acquiring ways to use the technology to its greatest potential were all apart of the day.
First, the sharing of ideas. Listening to others explain and show how they use various technology to create lessons for the classroom was very useful. Seeing how others use the technology can help me adapt the ideas to use in my classroom. One of the sharing ideas was the fur.ly web idea. I am planning to use that to create a lesson for my Christmas Around the World plans. I hope to use this for my assignment.
As for learning new skills and using the technology to create lessons was ongoing throughout the day. The morning with showing how to use the address book to create groups was very useful. Learning iChat and how to use it between staff was a good learning experience. I can see using iChat to share documents and photos with other staff will be of great value. Probably the best part of the day was learning many ways to use the Smartboard. Sara presented ways to create lessons and shortcuts with using the board. The Smartboard is an exciting way for kids to learn.
Finally I think my biggest need is the time to create lessons to use the technology available to me.
